The Columbus Dispatch: Visiting Cuban composer Jose Maria Vitier prepares for eclectic thanksgiving Mass

This month, the sounds and rhythms of Cuba have spread across the campus of Otterbein University in Westerville.

Cuban composer and pianist Jose Maria Vitier — accompanied by his wife, Silvia Rodriguez Rivero — has taken part in a residency there since April 1. While in central Ohio, the Havana native has given master classes and heard his work featured in concerts.

This weekend, as he nears the conclusion of his visit, the Westerville Symphony will perform one of his most popular works, a Roman Catholic Mass titled “Misa Cubana.”

For the Sunday concert, the orchestra will join Capriccio Columbus and three university ensembles: the Men’s Chorus, Women’s Chorale and Concert Choir. Vitier and Dean Marcellana will play the piano parts.

Review: “Opening Night” Sets High Bar For Symphony

“The hqdefaultCuban pianist Jorge Luis Prats, barred for 30 years from performing in the U.S., took Rachmaninoff, the audience and the entire orchestra, as well, into his superbly talented hands. If ever a reason was needed to end the embargo, Prats was it. His second Concerto was heart-stopping and heart-breaking in turns, and brought the house to its feet for an unstoppable applause that led a moved Prats to deliver an almost unbelievable three encores: Ignacio Cervantes’ “Danzas Cubanas,” Ernesto Lecuona’s “Mazurka” and Richard Wagner’s “Liebestod” (Liszt’s arrangement) from “Tristan and Isolde.” The year ahead has a high bar to reach, to match this.”
