I believe things have changed a lot in the past thirty years. Overall, the technical abilities of most pianists today are tremendous, but at the same time it is noticeable how much the artistic values and interpretations have deteriorated.  For example, there are pianist in conservatories that dedicate their time exclusively to prepare to enter international competitions, as a way to make money.
