Bohemian Trio at Spoleto Festival, May 28-31

Bohemian Trio

Bohemian Trio

Spoleto Festival (Charleston)
May 28 – 31
Tickets: https://spoletousa.org/events/bohemian-trio/

Drawn to the idea that a blend of traditions would speak to the true voice of the Americas, Yosvany Terry (saxophone and chékere), Orlando Alonso (piano), and Yves Dharamraj (cello) pooled their cultural and musical backgrounds to form the Bohemian Trio in 2013. Together, they forge a new identity—a polyphony of cultures—that transcends old-world boundaries. Bohemian Trio intertwines earthy, Afro-Cuban rhythms with sweeping classical melodies, jazz improvisation, and the celebration of Latin dance to transport its audiences to an inspired and fantastical place, though one longing for a bygone era at odds with the modern world. Grounded in both distinct formal traditions and abstract ideas, each member exhibits his own brand of technical prowess and invention, creating an extension of the familiar. Their musical narratives—deftly woven into original and commissioned works—simultaneously evoke joy, nostalgia, and passion.

This month, the sounds and rhythms of Cuba have spread across the campus of Otterbein University in Westerville.

Cuban composer and pianist Jose Maria Vitier — accompanied by his wife, Silvia Rodriguez Rivero — has taken part in a residency there since April 1. While in central Ohio, the Havana native has given master classes and heard his work featured in concerts.

This weekend, as he nears the conclusion of his visit, the Westerville Symphony will perform one of his most popular works, a Roman Catholic Mass titled “Misa Cubana.”

For the Sunday concert, the orchestra will join Capriccio Columbus and three university ensembles: the Men’s Chorus, Women’s Chorale and Concert Choir. Vitier and Dean Marcellana will play the piano parts.
